It has been a busy start to the month with lots going on including; signing with a new N.Island Distributor, completing the West Coast IPA beer for the Malthouse Challenge and heading to Christchurch for a catch up with our stockists.

Co-Pilot Distributors

The decision to sign with a distributor for the North Island wasn't one that was made over night. There has been a lot of thought about who should represent our brand and our company and after deliberating the pros and cons of making such a big decision we decided to sign with Co-Pilot Distributors. The main reason for making this move was driven by the growing demands of our small business. With just the two of us, we were starting to feel unable to effectively engage with our national stockists and decided that working together with Steve and his team of reps would allow us to distribute more efficiently and effectively to more places across the country.

Co Pilot Distributors is a family business owned and operated by husband and wife Steve Caplan and Glennie Mabin. It grew from their original business, a winery and restaurant in Riverhead. Opening in 1989, Riverhead Estate Winery and Glennie’s Wine Bar were well known in Auckland’s North West wine region. As an aside this is now the site of Hallertau Brewery where Simon mastered his skills as a brewer under the watchful eye of Steve Plowman. However, when the time came to sell the business Steve Caplan, who hadn’t really considered what he might do after not working 7 days a week decided to go out into the world and sell beer and wine.......so Co Pilot was born.

Co Pilot now represents a range of boutique wineries from all over New Zealand and several from Australia, and stock is held in warehouses in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. There’s a full time staff of 7, and several part-timers as well. Although the company is well known for wine distribution, Steve and the team had recently discussed the possibility of adding a new dimension to the portfolio with a range of craft beers. It seemed quite timely when out of the blue Simon approached Steve about distribution. So the partnership started from July 1 this year and finally the beers are getting out in to the wider market. Christchurch Visit -

Every few months Simon endeavours to head across the country and visit our Christchurch neighbours for a beer and a catch up. This month he did just that and headed to Misceo cafe for a "meet the brewer" talk and tasting. With our core range on tap all month as well as our Double IPA seasonal beer taking centre stage on the night it was a good turn out and a great night. Approx 50 people turned out to meet Simon and taste the beers with many of the patrons coming from the local SOBA group. Simon has another tasting planned for September so if you missed him this time round I'm sure you'll see him next time.

West Coast IPA Challenge - Malthouse, Wellington

The Malthouse are now in their 7th year of the West Coast IPA challenge and the popularity has just grown and grown. It all started with Luke Nicholas from Epic and Steve Plowman from Hallertau wanting to do a head to head on hoppy beers and it grew from there. In 7 years it has become one of the main events in the brewing calendar and you can expect to taste around 18 entries this year.

The premise is to make a beer in homage to green flash IPA, Sierra Nevada torpedo and similar beers. There are 2 champions- the judges pick ( Geoff Griggs, Neil miller, Kelly Ryan and a couple of others) and a peoples choice award - winners announced at 9pm Friday.

It is a great night to be part of and this year we have entered our big tasty all American hopped beer for the first time.

.

For those who want to be part of it head down to the Malthouse on Friday July 18th from 6pm. We'll see you there.
